What drew you to your craft?
Graphic design is my living but in the search for a personal creative outlet to balance the stress of work I play with textiles. It quickly became my passion and have been developing my skills for 15 years now. My free time is spent hand-painting fibers, creating textile art, and fine-tuning my techniques in indigo and shibori.
What is your creative process?
Like many artists, I’m endlessly inspired by the work of others and the ever-changing landscape of what is “new” and “now”. My goal is to take this inspiration and incorporate it with my own voice and passion. Each season I develop a collection around what currently surrounds me that I find inspirational; it could be anything from my change in zip codes to a color or pattern that invokes memories.
What is your favorite thing you have ever made?
Honestly, I love making all of my pieces. Improving my skills is very important to me so as I create new pieces I often find materials and techniques that really add a different element to my collection which is always a fun surprise. Dyeing can be a little hard to predict so some of my favorite pieces are the ones where the patterns came from a very organic process and their shape just unfolded before my eyes.
Why is it important to support local artists & makers?
Community is a word that is always in my head when developing my collections and individual pieces. By supporting local artists and makers, you are helping to develop community and shared resources that are so needed in today’s social and political climate.
Why do you love doing what you do?
I love what I do because it allows me the freedom to create while at the same time bring joy to others. There is nothing better than being at a show and hearing that someone owns a piece of your work that they love.
What advice do you have for other women who want to start their own businesses?
Expect tons of ups and downs. It can be discouraging going to a show and not selling anything at times but if you are passionate about something and can continue to develop it you will have rewarding days too. It is all a matter of drive and shutting out naysayers.
What is your favorite thing about exploring Ohio?
I moved back to Ohio about two years ago after 10 years in Chicago and realized how much I really appreciate the nature here. The parks and outdoor activities have really inspired me and drives my design in every aspect from color to texture to patterns. Cincinnati’s combination of such gorgeous nature preserves and bustling city life has really stolen my heart. I’ve very excited for my first Ohio Explored Holiday Market as I love the opportunity to see the community come together in this city I love.
